Histological appearance of subchondral structure in spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SONK) usually occurs in elderly patients with no osteonecrosis risk factors, and the lesion is confined to the medial femoral condyle in most cases. The histopathology of SONK lesion was initially thought to show signs of cell death. Recent reports have suggested that there is no histological evidence of true osteonecrosis in SONK, and the primary event leading to SONK is subchondral insufficiency fracture. However, the exact etiology and histopathological conditions of SONK remain unclear. The purpose of this study is to characterize the histopathological aspects of SONK using core biopsy specimens.

Early Stage Spontaneous Osteonecrosis of the Knee: MR Imaging Findings
To evaluate the MR imaging findings of early stage spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee. This study includes 21 spontaneous osteonecrosis cases (12 men, 9 women; mean age, 56.9 years) consulting to a radiology clinic for MR imaging of knee joint. Anteroposterior and lateral knee radiographies of all patients were obtained. 25 lesions observed on MRI in 21 patients were analysed. MR images were...

We prospectively examined the physical and imaging findings, including MRI, of 23 patients with spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee after obtaining informed consent to acquire tissue specimens at surgery. There were four men and 19 women, with a mean age of 67.5 years (58 to 77). Plain radiographs were designated as stages 1, 2, 3 or 4 according to the classification of Koshino. Five knees we...

Bone marrow lesions (BML) of the knee are a frequent MRI finding, present in many different pathologies including trauma, post-cartilage surgery, osteoarthritis, transient BML syndromes, spontaneous insufficiency fractures, and true osteonecrosis.Osteonecrosis (ON) is in turn divided into spontaneous osteonecrosis (SONK), which is considered to be correlated to subchondral insufficiency fractur...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Report of 2 Cases with Suspected Osteonecrosis
Knee specimens of two osteoporotic patients who underwent unilateral knee arthroplasty for suspected osteonecrosis of the knee were examined histologically. Preoperative findings of magnetic resonance images in both patients were consistent with the diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the medial femoral condyles, although plain X-rays showed minimal degenerative changes. In both patients, preoperativ...
